Build Your Own Ultralight

Ultralight Aircraft Reviews:

Designed by John Chotia, (of Weedhopper fame) the Woodhopper was Chotia's answer to a very light and inexpensive airplane. Featured on the cover of Popular Mechanics in 1981, many tens of thousands of plans were sold. Mr. Chotia went on and designed a more 'sturdy' version called the Gypsy. Unfortunately, shortly thereafter Mr. Chotia was killed while flying a new design.
But his genius lives on in his creations. The Woodhopper is not really an airplane to be used as a 'daily flier'. In fact, it is far more fragile than most ultralights of the present day. Construction is of Douglas fir wood and Dow blue styrofoam. Assembly goes very quickly for this airplane, but it is more succeptible to moisture, and must not be stored outdoors.
The ship uses a small 15 hp motor, and has two axis controls. With ample dihedral to keep you balanced, it is a delight to fly. But only on calm days!
