The Whing Ding was designed by R.W. Hovey of Saugus, California, in 1971 and was intended to be the lightest man carrying aircraft in the world.
The aircraft was featured in many popular magazines of the time, and Hovey sold many tens of thousands of plans sets. An amazing achievement!
The venerable little Whing Ding was the dream of many a young man and woman in the days long before ultralights came on the scene.
Hovey himself warned people that this aircraft was absolutely not for the amateur. It was just to 'play around with' in the air, and wasn't even meant to fly over people or houses!
The biplane design was unique in that wing warping (ala' Wright Brothers) was used for roll control. The motor was a tiny 15 hp McCollough, with a hand carved prop.
